Sumalatha was born on 27th August 1963 in Chennai and brought up in Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh. V.Madan Mohan is her father and her mother is V.Roopa Mohan. In 1991, Sumalatha got married to Ambareesh, a politician and actor and they have a six year old son, Abhishek.
Actress Suhasini Maniratnam is her good friend, and they have acted together in one Telugu movie.
Before starting her acting career she won a beauty contest in Andhra Pradesh .
The actress can speak six languages.
Career
Sumalatha started her acting career at the young age of 15. Sumalatha has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada movies. Sumalatha first Telugu movie was Samajaniki Saval (1979). Sumalatha was paired with actor Chiranjeevi in some Telugu movies like Swayamkrushi, Veta, and Kaidhi. Suma has worked with filmmaker K.Raghavendra Rao for Sri Manjunatha, opposite her husband Ambareesh.
Thazhvaram, Izabella, New Delhi, and No.20 Madras Mail are some of the Malayalam films she has acted in. The actress came into the limelight after Padmarajan's Thoovanathumbikal. It was one of her superhits where she acted alongwith superstar Mohanlal. The story of this movie was different from the usual Malayalam movies and was about the bachelor Jayakrishna and a prostitute Clara.
Sumalatha was paired with Ambareesh in the Kannada movie Kallarali Hoovagi which won the National Award. Astram (2005) was her last movie where she appeared as the lead actor's mother.
